Everyday life is filled with the mundane activities of life and peppered with opportunities for the misfortune. When misfortune hits, many are prepared financially with an insurance cover; normally representing a partial or full cover. If the person has a partial cover, the balance of the cost is assumed by the insured. When a full cover is in place, all of the risk is assumed by the insurance company. Income protection cover is almost always a partial cover. Very rarely will an insurance company replace 100% of an individual's income in any event.
Most companies offer income protection cover that equals a little more than one-half of your current gross earnings. If an illness or accent occurs making it impossible for you to work, they will pay out from 60-75 percent of your earnings. There is a waiting period in many insurance policies and the duration of the payout period normally ends after 24 months. The waiting period or deferment period often affects the monthly cost and can range from one month to 13 weeks. Waiting longer to commence receiving benefits equates to lower cost for the insurance.
Some policies have a cut-off age for receipt of benefits. Reaching the age of 65 ends your eligibility for income protection cover in many policies. Most policies will not provide long term payout periods either. If you are unable to perform your particular job duties for 2 years, the income protection cover applies. Beyond that period, the insured is expected to return to some form of employment if not their previous job duties. In some cases the insured cannot perform any type of employment tasks. In this circumstance, the company may offer a contingency plan which covers the insured until retirement age.
In your working years, the costs of an income protection could be as little as 35 pounds per month. The cover can also be paid in one annual lump sum. While the average consumer would prefer to pay less than 5 pounds a week, the cost is generally higher for each insurance company to provide this service to its clientele. Understanding that age often affects the likelihood of injury or illness has led to restricting the insurance cover after the age of 50 for some carriers and 60 to 65 for others.
As long as you receive income protection proceeds you're not obligated to pay income taxes and you're still eligible to receive incapacity benefits. If you claim a Disability Living Allowance, it's also tax free. The income limits will apply, but if you're eligible, combining all three resources could leave you in a very good financial position. Noted, it still not as good as receiving a paycheck, but it could pay your housing costs, utilities, food and transportation. You may be unable to order out and go to the movies, but as long as your basic expenses are covered, you don't have to worry about displacing your family or giving up any prized possessions because you need to raise money.
These plans do have limitations. They do not cover pre-existing health conditions or self-inflicted injuries. They do cover work related and non-work related accidents which offer considerable peace of mind because you never know when an accident might happen. It's good to know there are no restrictions as to the time and location of the event. Even if your employer pays for the insurance, you're covered outside the work environment. Employers, the self-employed and employees can buy this insurance. Everyone except the self-employed gets a percentage of gross pay. The self-employed get a percentage of pay after taxes.
Your spouse won't have to look for a part-time job and the kids won't need to work either. The family's lifestyle won't be turned upside down because of you injury. Instead, the purse strings will tighten a bit, but life will go on as usual.
