In the world of electronics and electrical engineering, the term fuse is described as a kind of an over current protection device. The fuse important part is a metal wire or a strip that melts whenever too much current flows that interferes the circuit in which is it is linked. The most common reasons for too much electrical current in a circuit are short circuit, overload or device failure. The fuse blows whenever it detects excessive current so that damage can be prevented due to overheating or fire. This is why protection devices such as fuse are important in electrical systems to avoid hazards to human life and property damage.
Thermal fuse is a type of safety device being installed in electrical appliances designed to break the circuit if the temperature rises to a dangerous level. Electrical devices that produce heat such as stoves, microwaves and hair dryers usually have thermal fuses as well as other electrical circuits such as light switches. The thermal fuses also work if other electrical safety measures such as circuit breakers fail to function.
The thermal fuse has important part such as a plastic pellet that will respond to heat. When this part is activated, the circuit is pushed open that prevents the electrical power from reaching the electrical appliance. This type of fuse is a single use protection device which means that once it blows or activated, it should be replaced. Fuse replacement in thermal type of fuse should never be done without even identifying the reason why the fuse failed. That is why the services of an electrician are needed to check on the appliance.
Whenever the thermal fuse activates or blows, aside from checking on the affected appliance to look for problems that led to overheating, it is also recommended to check the circuit in which the appliance is connected. This way also detects any electrical problems such as the electrical wiring issues of the house which can lead to overheating of an appliance without tripping the circuit breakers. However, if the appliances plugged into the same circuit keeps blowing off, this just means that there is a problem with the circuit and not with the appliance.
Thermal fuse replacement is usually an easy task. However for those homeowners or anyone who are not comfortable with any electrical work, it is best to have an electrician to do the work. Always remember that if performing any electrical work, you should ensure that the power to the circuit that you are working on is cut off.
