Power suppl-ies provide energy to electric loads and they convert one form of electrical energy to another. Usually they regulate output voltage to a specific value. That value is held constant without changing as the main supply changes. There are several different po-wer supplies for different devices. One of the most well known p-ower supplies is the PC pow-er supply, but there are more. LED power sup-ply, Din Rail power supp-ly, security p-ower supply, enclosed switching power su-pply, open frame switching power suppl-y, on board power sup-ply, modular p-ower supply and medical power suppl-y are some of the less well-known but widely used.
PC pow-er supplies convert AC current to DC current for our computers. Some allow you to manually select the voltage; some accept any voltage between limits and others function from one of the two mains supply standards. Most PC powe-r supplies made today, use ATX form factor. These are switched on and off by signals from the motherboard. They give out signals to the motherboard when the DC current is appropriate, so the PC can reboot. The ATX power sup-plies are connected to the mains. A LED power sup-ply is used in indoor and outdoor applications. These power LED signage, decorative lighting, stage and theatre lighting, display lighting, moving signs, displays and many others. These are energy efficient and use switched-mode technology. The LED power suppl-y is suitable for dry and damp locations as they are built with splash-proof and waterproof features.
Desktop adaptors too supply power to computers and are vital in controlling the voltage. They have in-built short circuit protection and are compact in size. They have universal AC input and consist of protection against short circuit, over load, over voltage and over temperature. A desktop adaptor is a good choice of properly regulated pow-er supply. Switched-mode power s-upplies use a switching regulator to become much more efficient in converting electricity. They transfer electricity to a load while at the same time convert voltage and current characteristics. They have smaller transformers and a higher operating frequency. A linear power suppl-y is used in certain electronic applications to set the voltage to a specific value and keep it stable despite the fluctuations in input voltage and load. Din Rail power suppli-es are used in household appliance control, control panels, data communication, factory automation and the electro-mechanical industry.
