Engine Checks A Key When You Buy A Used Nissan Skyline R32Â Â by Janus Onbekend
Buying any used car means making a thorough inspection of the vehicle, specially the engine. This is even more important when you buy a used Nissan Skyline R32, which would be a 20-year old car by this time. For two decade old cars though, R32s have generally aged very well, with a considerable number of them still on the road. Bear in mind that when you buy a used Nissan Skyline R32, you are basically buying a project car. If you are averse to higher than normal maintenance or doing some DIY car stuff, then you had better look at buying a different car. For the enthusiast, the attraction of the R32 comes from the fact that it so dominated the racing classes it was entered in, that it actually caused the demise of more than a few categories because of its performance.
Most R32s that are worth buying today are the RB-powered models, which is basically an inline six. The higher-specification models are the turbocharged ones, which would be the GTS-t, GTS-4 and the GT-R. The first two models feature a 2-liter displacement and a single turbo, while the GT-R's RB26DETT engine displaces 2.6 liters and features twin turbochargers.
The most basic test when you intend to buy a used Nissan Skyline R32 is to do a compression test on the engine. A sound engine will test at 150 or higher, and all six cylinders should test very close to each other. Also check for bluish smoke at the exhaust, this is indicative of engine wear caused by high-speed oil starvation. A turbo engine is also fairly sensitive to heat and a seller should be able to prove that frequent (using premium) oil changes were made. Flaking paint on the exhaust manifold in these cars can mean extreme use. Turbochargers also need to be replaced and mileage will vary depending on the frequency of oil changes, type of oil used and adherence to cool-down procedures. In the GT-R, the rear turbo is usually the first to fail, and parts of the ceramic wheels have been known to find their way to the catalytic converter. This failure is most common when the factory boost control solenoids have been tampered with to produce higher boost. The R32s also suffered from a weak oil pump drive, which caused premature failure. Being 20 years old, it's not uncommon to find R32s with rebuilt engines. Make sure that OEM or upgraded aftermarket components have been used. This is very important if you expect to buy a used Nissan Skyline R32 that has an engine that will not give you lots of headaches down the road.
