Is Tiger Woods The Best Golfer Of All Time? Â Â by Lorin Willis
Ever since he sprang onto the scene just before the turn of the century, Tiger Woods has been at the center of the golfing universe. Athletic, strong and charismatic, Woods had a long history of handling the media and his personal life every bit as well as he handled his game out on the course, up until November of 2009. Woods has always combined his many physical gifts with a steely mental approach, leading to nearly 100 professional victories over the course of his career. In light of his meteoric rise and recent fall, many are asking whether or not Tiger Woods is the best golfer of all time. Here is the answer.
Up until his personal life became front page tabloid material and he took an extended hiatus from the game of golf, Tiger Woods was clearly well on his way to being the greatest golfer of all time. Many experts were not discussing whether or not he would best Jack Nicklaus' record of victories in major tournaments, but when. In some years, Woods was so dialed in that fellow PGA Tour professionals admitted they often went into tournaments feeling like they were playing for 2nd place. Woods was long and straight off of the tee, could stick long and short irons to within feet of the cup on a regular basis, and drained as many long putts as anyone on tour. Up until the evening of November 27th, 2009, the answer to the aforementioned question was almost certainly a yes.
Given the incredible fall of the once iconic golfer and his ineptitude on the course in recent months, it seems a bit shortsighted and presumptuous to say that Woods is the single greatest golfer of all time. Greatness -- let alone epic greatness -- is almost always a constant course of achievement and triumph. Rarely is someone or something considered to be the greatest of all time unless their active times were filled with steady and constant domination.
Given that he is still considered to be in the prime of his professional golfing career, Woods can certainly turn things around quickly. He recently snagged his first victory in over two years in an overseas tournament that occurred after the conclusion of this year's PGA schedule. If he is able to build upon that and rattle off a few PGA Tour wins in 2012, he will likely get his confidence and most of his fan base back. With those elements on his side, seeing the name Woods atop the leaderboard can once again be a regularity.
As of this moment in time, the answer to the million dollar question would have to be no.
